Michael Jang Posted August 21, 2010 Report Share Posted August 21, 2010 My home desktop PC with Windows XP on it was crashed last week. I took it to a computer shop nearby for help. After they reinstalled Windows XP with SP3. I took it back and installed other softwares, such as MS Office, Microsoft ForeFront Client Security. However, when I tried to get the latest Windows Update from IE 8 Tools menu, it comes out nothing in the list. At the beginning I thought it might be because the computer shop had got the latest update as they claimed. However, after a few days, I realize that something was wrong, cause the other two XP machines at home with Microsoft FrorFront Client on it are able to get the latest ForeFront security definition nearly daily.In the WindowsUpdata.log, I saw some errors like below.WARNING: WinHttp: SendRequestUsingProxy failed for <http://download.windowsupdate.com/v9/windowsupdate/a/selfupdate/WSUS3/x86/Other/wsus3setup.cab>. error 0x80072f78WARNING: WinHttp: SendRequestUsingProxy failed for <http://download.windowsupdate.com/v9/windowsupdate/redir/muv4wuredir.cab>. error 0x80072f78WARNING: WinHttp: SendRequestToServerForFileInformation MakeRequest failed. error 0x80072f78WARNING: WinHttp: SendRequestToServerForFileInformation failed with 0x80072f78WARNING: WinHttp: ShouldFileBeDownloaded failed with 0x80072f78I google them and tried some suggestions without luck, such as Stop Automatic Update Services, rename Windows "SofwareDistribution" folder, and re-start Automatic Update Services. bludgard Posted August 21, 2010 Report Share Posted August 21, 2010 What antivirus/spyware are you using?Firewall?I know this is a little off base and not a solution,but maybe one persons problem may be another's pleasure.Look at what MSE may do:--->Windows Forum ThreadI would think that as much time as your machine has been in the local computer repair/service vendor,maybe they would know precisely what it is.Give them a call.Couldn't hurt-unless they gauge you to the point of charging you by the minute on the tele.I'm not exactly sure what the targeted paths that are referred to in your post mean.All I could do is use a search engine to try to find any other content on it.Looks like a communication block between your machine "SendRequestUsingProxy failed" and the target "<http://download.windowsupdate.com/v9/windowsupdate/redir/muv4wuredir.cab>."I would suspect either anti virus/spyware,firewall,or a services setting. :unknown: Maybe someone else here could assist you more.Keep us updated....
